What's Worth Leaving The House For Around Bid-A-Wee This August

What's Worth Leaving The House For Around Bid-A-Wee This August

Two miles from your front door, cranes are working. Steps from your front door, the shoreline looks the same as it did when it was dedicated in 1938. That gap between the constant and the changing is the story of a Bid-A-Wee weekend right now, and it changes what "going out" is even supposed to mean when you already live here.

The west end of Panama City Beach is in the middle of a simultaneous rebuild. Topgolf is open. Pirate's Voyage is open. Hook'd is coming back. Shell Point is about to break ground. Meanwhile the 2,000-plus feet of dedicated Bid-A-Wee shoreline, one nonprofit's job to protect since the Roosevelt administration, still opens with a code. The practical question for residents is which of those things is worth the golf-cart trip this weekend, and which is worth just walking to.

The concert clock is running out

The 2026 Summer Concert Series at Aaron Bessant Park Amphitheater runs Thursdays, 7 to 9 p.m., from June 4 through August 6. That means one Thursday left after this one. The city keeps the format loose: lawn chairs, blankets, coolers, food, and pets are all welcome, and the lineup this year covers funk, soul, bluegrass, rock, country, and New Orleans-inspired sets, with food trucks parked around the amphitheater lawn.

If you have been meaning to go all summer and haven't, this is the deadline. The series does not resume in the fall. What replaces it in the calendar is the Panama City Songwriter's Festival at the Panama City Center for the Arts in early November, and then the Beach Home for the Holidays weekend at Aaron Bessant over Thanksgiving.

Practical note for anyone parking near Pier Park on a Thursday night: you are sharing the lot with concertgoers, Topgolf traffic, and the Pirate's Voyage crowd. Give yourself twenty extra minutes or ride in.

What has actually opened at Pier Park this year

The Pier Park tenant mix has turned over noticeably in the last twelve months. If your mental map of the center still stops at Target, Dillard's, JCPenney, Ron Jon, and Margaritaville, here is what has landed since:

  • Sephora, next to Target, with the store manager transferring in from the Destin location.
  • Palmetto Moon, casual Southern and beach apparel, next to JD Sports.
  • Salty Shoes by Hy's Toggery and Awoken Kicks, both on the shoe side.
  • JD Sports and Hollister Co., filling out the apparel wing.
  • ERRA Books, Hello Gorgeous, and Paradise Nutrition on the smaller-format side.
  • McGuire's Irish Pub, the third location of the Pensacola and Destin original, now serving in PCB.
  • Topgolf, near Pier Park, with 74 climate-controlled hitting bays, a full restaurant and bar, a 22-foot video wall, and more than 140 televisions.
  • Dolly Parton's Pirate's Voyage Dinner Show, in a 60,000-square-foot indoor theater visible from the road, running a four-course dinner alongside the stunt show.

The reason to catalog this is not novelty. It is that a resident who used to drive to Destin for Sephora or to Pensacola for McGuire's now does not have to. That is a small, real change in weekly errands.

The construction map worth knowing

A few Pier Park-adjacent projects are still on the board. Knowing where they are on the timeline saves the "wait, is that open yet?" question at dinner.

Project Status as of 2026 What it is
Hook'd Pier Bar & Grill Rebuilding after fire, targeting Spring 2026 reopen Two floors, larger deck, more seating, same beachfront footprint at the pier
Shell Point Beach & Surf Club Construction starts 2026, opening targeted for 2027 10.5-acre surf destination east of Topgolf, partnered with Endless Surf for year-round waves, a members' beach club with private pool and spa, a swim-up bar overlooking the surf lagoon, plus a surf academy
Tootsie's Orchid Lounge Pier Park location closed, moving to a larger beachfront space The Nashville honky-tonk transplant that has been in Pier Park since 2008
Margaritaville Beach Cottage Resort clubhouse Open, with a third-floor event space still under construction Includes the Licensed To Chill restaurant, the Fins Up Fitness Center, Fin City Arcade, and Joe Merchand's Provisions

Shell Point is the one to watch. A private surf lagoon inside walking distance of Bid-A-Wee changes what a Saturday afternoon looks like for anyone with kids, and it is going to reshape traffic patterns on Front Beach Road well before it opens.

When you would rather not leave the block

The Bid-A-Wee residents who bought here in the last five years and the ones who have been here for thirty tend to agree on one thing: the reason to live here is that you do not have to participate in any of the above unless you feel like it.

The neighborhood's roughly 2,000 to 2,500 feet of gated shoreline, depending on which measurement you trust, was formally dedicated in 1938 "for park purposes only" to the property owners of the community. Bid-A-Wee Park Beach Inc. maintains the dune fencing, the crosswalks, and the access gates. The stretch has never been developed with high-rises because it was never available to develop. That is the reason your morning walk looks nothing like Front Beach Road half a mile east.

A short list of things you can do without getting in a car:

  • Walk to Bid-A-Wee Park on Crane Street for the playground, picnic tables, and the community events the park hosts through the year.
  • Pick up the upgraded Front Beach Road walking and biking path, which now connects the neighborhood to the parks, restaurants, and shops running east toward Pier Park.
  • Cut over to Shipwreck Island Waterpark on Middle Beach Road, which is right next to the neighborhood boundary and is a routine summer answer for grandkids visiting from out of town.
  • Bike or cart the roughly two miles to Russell-Fields Pier for fishing, a sunset walk, or the Fourth of July fireworks show that stages off the pier every year.

The Sip & Bite, Tiki Mike's Exotic Tea and Coffee Bar, and Emerald Coast Olive Oil sit close enough to fold into a walking loop when the weather cooperates. None of these are new. That is the point.

A weekend template

If you want a compact way to think about the next Bid-A-Wee weekend that actually uses what is happening this month:

Thursday evening. The last of the Summer Concert Series. Bring a chair, walk over from the neighborhood if the wind is right, come back before the parking lot empties.

Friday. Skip Pier Park at dinner rush. Pick a slot after 8 p.m. for McGuire's, or drive the other direction toward Thomas Drive, which has quietly become the east-end alternative when Pier Park is over-scheduled.

Saturday morning. Front Beach Road path early, before the tourist traffic warms up. If you have a golf cart, the loop from Bid-A-Wee Park to Russell-Fields and back is about forty minutes at a slow pace.

Saturday afternoon. Private beach access. This is the day of the week when the difference between the gated stretch and the public access points three blocks over is most obvious.

Sunday. If you have not been to Topgolf yet and want to see what has drawn all the traffic, mid-morning is the least-crowded window. If you have already seen it, this is a good day to walk the dog and read on the porch.

What to plan for after Labor Day

Two things worth putting in a calendar. The Panama City Songwriter's Festival runs November 6 and 7 at the Panama City Center for the Arts, and Beach Home for the Holidays kicks off at Aaron Bessant Park over Thanksgiving weekend with fireworks, carolers, concerts, and Santa. Neither of those is a Bid-A-Wee event, but both are close enough that residents tend to fold them in.

The bigger fall story is watching how the Hook'd reopen and the Shell Point groundbreaking land. When Shell Point actually turns dirt, traffic patterns on Front Beach Road east of the neighborhood will start to shift, and the value of walkable neighborhood beach access becomes a little more apparent than it already is.

If you own here, you already know most of that in your bones. If you have been thinking about what your Bid-A-Wee home is worth in a market where the surrounding parcels are being reshaped this quickly, or you are weighing whether to hold, rent, or sell into next season, the team at Beach King Realty is happy to talk it through without a pitch.
